29 May Aspartame Danger
Aspartame Danger
You may have heard of such terms as nutra sweet, sweeteners and equal. What you may not know is that they contain an ingredient called Aspartame. Since its approval back in 1982 it has been constantly dogged by complaints on its safety and leading health funds continue to express their concerns on its long term side effects. They believe much research is needed into such things as neurological functions, brain tumours, seizures, headaches and adverse effects on pregnant women!
Yet this toxic ingredient is the most utilised sweetener in the US with Americans consuming close to 50 billion litres of diet soda each year thinking they are doing their body good. Believing diet is better and will keep the weight off.
The whole Aspartame debate is based on the approval 20 years ago – a decision heavily influenced by political wrangling and alleged scientific fraud. New studies continue to conclude that the decision was completely ignorant at best. And the scariest part? There has not been any long term research done into the effects of this ‘toxic’ chemical.
I have a friend who drinks diet coke every single day. She loves it and it gives her energy for her day. It worries me so much thinking of what it is doing to the inside of her body.
AND please let me dispel that myth that drinking diet keeps you thin. There are 2 amino acids in aspartame that make up 90% of it and are known to rapidly stimulate the release of insulin and leptin which are 2 hormones involved with satiety and fat storage. Insulin and leptin are also primary hormones that regulate your metabolism. Elevated insulin and leptin levels are 2 of the driving forces behind obesity, diabetes and a number of other chronic disease epidemics.
Over time if your body is exposed to too much leptin it will become resistant to it and once this happens your body can no longer ‘hear’ the hormonal messages instructing your body to stop eating and burn fat. WHAT HAPPENS THEN? You remain hungry, you crave sweets and your body stores more fat. Ok glass of water anyone?
