03 Feb The perks of yoga
Why yoga is good for both body and mind
If like me your a yoga regular, you will completely understand it when I say there is no feeling quite like the one you have when you walk out of a yoga practise. Whether your yoga of choice be hatha, vinyasa, japanese, a power yoga or a combination of all – the benefits are mind blowing. If you are a complete novice then you are just going to have to trust me on this !
Yoga has been around for hundred and hundreds of years, the origin being India. These dedicated yogis’ would practise for hours on end, with a soul purpose of being 100% in the present moment, becoming more and more dedicated and a strengthening of both the mind and body. Press the forward button and today yoga is one of the most popular ways to meditate, exercise, focus and ultimately enrich our lives for the better. My own personal belief is everything in moderation and although I run a boot camp business with ‘hardcore’ type exercises, I cannot stress enough how important it is to throw a yoga class in every now and then. Exercise such as our running classes are great for you. They are good for the heart, cardiovascular system, fitness and the stimulation of endorphins. However, these forceful strides can cause an imbalance of opposing muscle groups and yoga can balance these out, bringing much needed balance, flexibility and ultimately will improve your running ability!
So how does yoga actually work?
Through a series of postures, breathing and meditation. It is said to be the perfect union of mind, body and spirit. Every posture has a different name and includes standing postures, seated twists, backbends and core holds. The downward dog is one of the most recognisable standing poses and in itself is said to calm the brain, energise the body, improve digestion, strengthen arm and legs and therapeutic for high blood pressure.
