My Fitness Philosophy
Number 1:
Be good to your body
I truly believe our body is our temple and therefore we need to treat it like one. There is no point in training so hard that you run yourself into the ground or at the other end of the spectrum train little or not at all. We only have one body so be good to it. If you feel really exhausted one day because the kids have had you up all night, go for an energizing walk or try some stretching or yoga…this brings me to my next belief…
Number 2:
Flexibility
You will set yourself up for failure if you set a rigid training schedule (especially being a mum!). Life happens, kids happen! So try and relax your approach and take each day at a time. This isn’t to say not to plan your training, but to be open to change. This might mean you have to postpone your workout until the evening after hubby gets home or to do your workout in the park while your kids play for half an hour.
Number 3:
Love what you do/stay consistent
There is absolutely no point in joining a gym if you despise being indoors or no point in registering for the half marathon if running is on par with poking needles in your eyes! To remain consistent and maintain a positive mindframe (which is half the battle, lets face it), we need to enjoy the training whether it be running, circuits, or swimming. If you need to join a fitness group for the social aspect, do it! Whatever it takes to keep on moving.
Number 4:
Give yourself a break
And I mean give yourself a kit kat break! Yes it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom when it comes to eating. As long as you are eating 80% clean most of the week you can give yourself a yummy treat the other 20%. Just don’t go overboard! This keeps our sanity in check and our weight loss/maintenance in check. We are less likely to fall off the health and fitness wagon if we indulge a little on our favourite treat every now and then.
Number 5:
Keep accountable
It is easy to believe those calories didn’t count since no one saw you eating them, but lets not kid ourselves! I believe keeping yourself accountable whether it is through signing up to personal training or bootcamp, keeping a food and exercise diary or even touching base with a friend or your partner on how you are doing is a huge help. Sometimes we need that extra motivation to keep up the good work.
